The Economic Developers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (EDANL) is laying the foundation for the creation of a professional development and training program for practitioners in the province.
“Economic developers are on the front lines of the growth of our communities, our businesses, our industries, and the province at-large,” said Jennifer Penney, Economic Development Officer for the Town of Paradise and EDANL’s President.
Penney said the role that economic developers play in this province is going to be more important than ever in Newfoundland and Labrador, as it works to rebuild its economy.
“There’s no limit to the contribution that economic developers can make to our economy,” said Penney, “but in order to meet their potential they need the right skills, be aware of the best practices, and have forums to learn from the experiences of others.”
Penney said that it was incumbent on EDANL to drive the creation of these resources for its members, and that this was the rationale behind recent research that EDANL undertook in partnership with Dr. Tom Cooper.
“Through engagement with stakeholders, members, and subject-matter experts, Dr. Cooper helped us narrow in on the areas where EDANL could provide most value to its members and the province, without duplicating some of the excellent resources that are already out there.”
A summary of Dr. Cooper’s findings are available via the recorded webinar at the top of the page.
“While Newfoundland and Labrador faces immense challenges, there are great opportunities before us well,” said Penney. “Having an economic developer workforce that is highly skilled and experienced will go a long way in helping us make the most of those opportunities and build a better future for the province.”
EDANL is the provincial organization of economic developers pursuing excellence in the field in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Association’s mission is to enhance the professional competence of economic development officers; to advance economic development as a distinct, recognized, and self-governing profession; and to contribute to the province’s economic well-being.
