Economic Development training courses scheduled for December 7-8, 2023

On December 7-8, 2023 EDANL will be hosting two training courses custom designed for economic development practitioners in Newfoundland and Labrador. The two courses include:

  • Economic and Community Development in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Capacity, Placemaking, and Opportunity Management

These courses will be presented back-to-back over two days of instruction and interactive learning in a classroom setting.

COURSE 1

ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

This course focuses on the unique characteristics of economic and community development in Newfoundland and Labrador. Historical structures, trends, and issues of economic and community development within the province are discussed, while past successes and failures are explored in order to stimulate thinking on best practices.

The course features a mix of instruction, facilitated discussion, and group work which will leverage the expertise and insights of class participants in a rich group learning environment. Participants will meet and network with their economic development peers and build lasting relationships that will benefit their careers. Participants will be provided with tools that they can take away to apply within the context of their own work.

This course includes the following modules:

  • Introduction to Economic and Community Development in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Exercise – Community and Economic Development Identification
  • What is Economic Development in Newfoundland and Labrador?
  • Exercise – Economic Development Failures and Successes
  • Approaches to Community Development
  • Exercise – Community Development in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Economic and Community Development Tools
  • Exercise – Identifying Economic and Development Drivers in the Travel and Tourism Industry in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Economic and Community Development Models and Approaches
  • Exercise – Developing a Community and Economic Development Model Unique to Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Specific Tools and Techniques for Newfoundland and Labrador Economic and Community Development

Note that completion of this course will provide you with 5 points towards your Ec.D. Certification with the Economic Developers Association of Canada.

COURSE 2

CAPACITY, PLACEMAKING, AND OPPORTUNITY MANAGEMENT

Combined with recent developments in the emerging concept of placemaking, this course will focus on capacity building for local business, government, and other stakeholders to take economic and community development forward in the province. This course also helps students understand how to prioritize opportunities and ensure time and efforts are being directed towards the best initiatives.

The course features a mix of instruction, facilitated discussion, and group work which will leverage the expertise and insights of class participants in a rich group learning environment. Participants will meet and network with their economic development peers and build lasting relationships that will benefit their careers. Participants will be provided with tools that they can take away to apply within the context of their own work.

This course includes the following modules:

  • Introduction to capacity, placemaking and opportunity management in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Exercise – Initiative identification
  • Exercise – Failures and Successes
  • Approaches to capacity, placemaking and opportunity management
  • Exercise – Capacity, placemaking and opportunity management in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Capacity, placemaking, and opportunity management Tools
  • Exercise – Identifying capacity, placemaking and opportunity management strategies in the seafood industry in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Economic and community development models and approaches
  • Exercise – Developing a capacity, placemaking and opportunity management model unique to Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Specific tools and techniques for Newfoundland and Labrador capacity, placemaking and opportunity management

Note that completion of this course will provide you with 5 points towards your Ec.D. Certification with the Economic Developers Association of Canada.

INSTRUCTOR:

Dr. Tom Cooper is a Professor in Strategic Management at the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University. His research interests include risk management, strategic planning and Indigenous/Aboriginal business.

Tom has specific interests in social innovation and entrepreneurship as it relates to communities. His research approach is focused on a collaborative, participatory research approach that aims to make a difference in the organizations, communities and people. Tom has a Ph.D. in Business from the University of Warwick and, prior to returning to academia, spent seven years with PwC in London, UK as a senior manager in their governance, risk, and compliance consulting group.

He is the past Chair of Food First Newfoundland and Labrador and sits on their executive committee, past Chair of SmartICE, and currently the Public Representative on both the boards of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as the Provincial Health Research Ethics Authority Board for Genetics.
